Placenta Encapsulation

Natural Postpartum Support

Placenta encapsulation is the process of preparing the mother's placenta after the birth of her baby by cooking, dehydrating, the placenta, and grinding the placenta into powder which is then placed into capsules for ingestion by the mother. The ingestion of the placenta is known as "placentophathy"

Why encapsulate your placenta?

While research is limited, the placenta contains many hormones, vitamins, and minerals such as oxytocin, estrogen, proteins, and iron. Though scientific research on the benefits are limited there are many positive reported benefits of placenta encapsulation.

Our Process

It is our top priority to provide you with safe placenta services. We promise to take exceptional care of your placenta so that you can feel safe consuming your placenta. Brenna is a certified placenta encapsulator, OSHA blood borne pathogen trained and has attended food handling and safety courses to ensure that your placenta is safely encapsulated. We take pride in our process and to ensure proper placenta handling we require anyone requesting placenta services to thoroughly read through the requirements of placenta handling until pick up. This information can be found in our contract.

After signing up for placenta services it is your responsibility to notify us that you are in labor and again as soon as possible after delivery. You will be responsible for bringing 2 gallon ziplock bags and a cooler with ice to your delivery. Once delivered double bag the placenta and place in the cooler on ice within 3 hours of delivery. It should be cooled as soon as possible. Improper storage of the placenta are susceptible to spoilage and will not be acceptable for encapsulation.

The placenta is cut into strips and then placed in a dehydrator for 12 hours.

The dehydrated strips are blended into a fine powder.

FAQ

Is placentopathy safe?

Yes. The placenta is made by your body and does not cause harm when handled properly and in the absence of any infection disease. Brenna is a licensed placenta encapsulator, OSHA blood borne pathogen trained and has attended food handling and safety courses to ensure that your placenta is properly encapsulated.

Under what circumstances in placentopathy NOT recommended?

In certain situations placentopathy is not recommended due to safety reasons. Many of these reasons are linked to infections and infection risk. Your placenta should not be encapsulated and we will not encapsulate your placenta if you develop an infection during labor called chorioamnionitis, if you have a blood borne infection such as HIV, Hepatitis B, or Hepatitis C, if you have an STD such as chlamydia or gonorrhea, if your placenta is not stored properly after delivery, or if your provider sends your placenta to pathology.

Is GBS a contraindication for placentopathy?

No GBS or group B streptococcus is not a contraindication for placentopathy. Our placenta encapsulation process begins with washing and then steaming the placenta until the center is 165 degrees fahrenheit to ensure that the GBS infection is no longer present and the placenta is safe to consume.

What does it taste like?

Once encapsulated, your placenta won't taste any different from other vitamins you would take. Women report an earthy taste to their encapsulated placenta. We offer capsules with flavoring to mask any unpleasant taste.

Is consuming your placenta cannibalism?

The placenta is neither a part of your, nor your baby's body. It is made up of the same DNA as your baby but removes itself on its own. NO person is harmed to obtain it and its actually the creation of life that creates the placenta.

Is there enough proof?

This is a question that ultimately only you can answer for yourself. While there has not been and abundance of research on plancentopathy, we do know that it is made up of hormones and minerals that are deficient and beneficial in the postpartum period. While the scientific research is limited the anecdotal evidence is very strong and positive for placentopathy.
