What is a birth doula?
The word doula is from the ancient Greek meaning "woman who serves" we made our own new modern version of the meaning of doula, "birth BFF”. The role of the birth doula is to be an added support to your birth team with specific knowledge about birth. Your partner is someone that is irreplaceable and it is not our goal to replace them. Our goal is to be an added resource to make you and your partner more confident and comfortable throughout your birthing experience. A doula has specific training on the process of labor and how to educate a mother and her partner on how to prepare and cope with labor. Many mothers and their partners have no idea what lies ahead of them when they begin their pregnancy journey. Having a birth doula is like having a pregnancy and birth guide to help answer the questions and ease any anxieties that may arise. Doulas focus on supporting the birthing woman holistically. There is much more to birth than the body and the baby. The mental aspect of birth is so important and can often be overlooked when planning for birth. There are three core supports that a doula focuses on when working with a mother. The pillars of wholistic doula support are informational, emotional, and physical support.
Informational
We help keep you and your partner informed through each stage of your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum journey. We have done our research so that we can be a unbias resource to give you valuable understandable information. Our goal is to give you evidence based information about your rights and options throughout your pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum period.
Emotional
The many emotions that some with pregnancy and childbirth are normal and valid. As your doula we strive to be a calming presence to you and your partner. We are the gatekeeper of the birth space. We help filter negative energy out of the room. We are your biggest encourager to keep you motivated though your birth.
Physical
We use our knowledge of the human anatomy and physiology of birth to help decrease pain and increase space in the pelvis for the path of lease resistance for the baby to pass through the birth canal. Using the tools of optimal position changes, movement, stretches, massage, counter pressure, and hydrotherapy are all examples of how doulas support your physical needs in labor.
